IAM urges public to stop consumption of a black truffle sauce product found to contain excessive amount of heavy metal
MACAU, September 30 - The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has found that a prepackaged black truffle sauce product contained an excessive amount of the heavy metal total arsenic during routine sample testing of food. IAM has immediately followed up on the issue and ordered the involved business to stop selling and recall the affected batch of products. Members of the public are urged to stop eating it.
The brand of the involved product is “Familie”, and the product name is “Black Truffle Sauce Natural Truffle 5%”, with a net weight of 192 grams and the expiry date is 11 November 2027. The amount of total arsenic detected in the sample was 0.60 mg/kg, exceeding the standard stipulated in Macao’s Administrative Regulation No. 23/2018 “Maximum Limits of Heavy Metal Contaminants in Food”.
Arsenic is a toxic heavy metal element widely spread in the environment. Human exposure to it predominantly occurs through the intake of food and drinking water. Arsenic poisoning may cause damage to skin, blood vessels, nervous and urinary systems, impact fetal development, and lead to an elevated risk of skin cancer, liver cancer, bladder cancer and lung cancer. Analysis of the arsenic content in the involved sample indicated that the risk of adverse health effects was low under standard dietary exposure.
As a precautionary measure, IAM urges consumers who possess the relevant batch of products to immediately stop eating it, whether the product was purchased from the Internet, through shopping agents or other channels. Members of the sector should also stop supplying and selling this product without delay and contact IAM’s Department of Food Safety by calling 2833 8181. IAM will continue to follow up on the incident and prevent the distribution of the involved product in the market.
