26 Candidates Selected for Macao SAR's Legislative Assembly
The Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election of Macao SAR released the preliminary results early Monday, according to media.
The newly elected legislature, set to consist of 33 members, includes 14 directly elected representatives, 12 indirectly elected, and seven individuals who will be appointed by the Macao SAR chief executive. The chief executive is required to designate the appointees within 15 days of receiving the final election results.
The Legislative Assembly serves as the lawmaking authority for Macao SAR, and all its members are permanent residents. Legislative terms are typically four years long, with exceptions for the inaugural term, which operates under different rules.
In 2024, the Macao SAR revised its Legislative Assembly Election Law to reinforce the vetting process for candidates, ensuring adherence to the principle of "patriots administering Macao" within the region's legal framework.
